Welcome to the Taj Mahal Visit

The Taj Mahal is a breathtaking marble mausoleum located on the south bank of the Yamuna river in the city of Agra, India. It is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful buildings ever created and stands as a timeless testament to human artistry and devotion.

Commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan to house the tomb of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal, the construction took approximately 22 years to complete, with the main mausoleum finished by 1648. The complex is a masterpiece of Mughal architecture, blending elements from Persian, Islamic, and Indian styles. The chief architect is generally believed to be Ustad Ahmad Lahauri.

The most striking feature is the central dome, which is nearly 35 meters high. The entire structure is made of shimmering white marble, which was transported from Makrana, Rajasthan. This marble is inlaid with thousands of semi-precious stones (pietra dura technique), forming intricate floral and calligraphic designs that appear to change color depending on the time of day—from a soft pink at dawn to dazzling white during the day, and a silvery sheen under the moonlight.

The complex is set within a vast 42-acre area that includes a mosque, a guest house (jawab), and extensive Charbagh (four-part Mughal garden) with a long reflecting pool that perfectly mirrors the structure. The four minarets flanking the tomb are slightly tilted outward so they would fall away from the crypt in the event of a collapse.

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, the Taj Mahal attracts millions of visitors annually and is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. It remains a powerful symbol of India’s rich history and architectural prowess, a true "jewel of Muslim art in India."
